It Snow Use – I love The Snow
There seems to be a lot of people that complain about the snow. Now I confess, if I lived in the snow belt I might feel differently but the amount we get should create no complaints. As I walked into town this morning, I walked on snow that had no footprints already in it. I kind of like that. Sort of like being the first person to take peanut butter out of the jar. Walking through the snow got me thinking of snow mwmories from all time periods. Here they are in no particular order.
I remember my mother pulling me to elementary school on a sled. Unlike now, where they have 2 hour delays here if the roads contain a dusting, NYC schools back in the 50’s did not close for snow, at least not what I remember.
We had a garage under our house, hence a nice steep incline to go down. Logic sid to me that if the runners on a sled made you go fast then a giant runner would make you go very fast. (to this day I can’t believe I did this). What I did was attached sheetmetal to wood, and climb on the sheet metal and slide down the driveway. No, I didn’t get a concussion. What I did though was jump off the dump creation I made and managed to get the point of the metal into my wrist, which made a nice gash and missed a main artery by about an inch. There was blood all over the snow so when my mother came home it was hard to answer “what blood?” I wound up getting a couple of stitches for that genius idea.
We used to keep a pail of rock salt near the front door. It was 100% salt, not like the stuff they make today. I liked to take some and suck on it in the way to school.
I remember my Dad building a giant igloo in our back yard, so big we could stand in it. I couldn’t help make it though. I had pretended to be sick so I didn’t have to go to church and I tried to miraculously get better after lunch. It didn’t work. I got stuck in bed all afternoon.
The winter we moved to PA we had about 60″ of snow, way more than we were used to. I shoveled the snow into giant mountains next to the driveway and halloed them out into a cave. It was big enough for me and my youngest daughter to fit. We put down blankets on the floor.
